Our Review Methodology

Our reviews are based on a structured evaluation process designed to provide gardeners with clear, comparable, and trustworthy assessments of seed companies. We evaluate each company across five key dimensions, each scored on a scale of 1 to 10.

1. Seed Quality (Weight: 25%)

We evaluate germination rates, seed viability, genetic integrity, and quality control practices. This includes reviewing the company's stated germination rates, whether they test seeds routinely, compliance with Federal Seed Act standards, and the presence of third-party verification such as Non-GMO Project Verified certification.

2. Pricing Value (Weight: 20%)

We assess packet prices, seed counts, per-plant cost calculations, shipping policies, and available discounts. We compare each company's pricing to the market average and evaluate whether the quality justifies the price. Free shipping thresholds and bulk options are also considered.

3. Variety Selection (Weight: 20%)

We evaluate the breadth and depth of the catalog, including the number of varieties, range of crop types (vegetables, herbs, flowers), availability of heirloom, organic, and hybrid options, and whether the selection is curated for home gardeners or oriented toward commercial growers.

4. Website Security (Weight: 15%)

We assess the security of the company's website, including HTTPS encryption, payment processor integration, privacy policy transparency, account security features, and overall data protection practices. See our security page for details.

5. Customer Service (Weight: 20%)

We evaluate the company's customer service reputation, return and replacement policies, responsiveness, available support channels, and the quality of growing information provided on packets and the website.

Scoring Process

Each dimension is scored from 1 to 10. The overall score is a weighted average of the five dimension scores. Scores are reviewed and updated periodically to reflect changes in pricing, policies, and product offerings. The last updated date is shown on each review page.

Editorial Independence

Our ratings are determined by our editorial team based on publicly available information, company websites, published policies, and industry knowledge. We do not accept payment for reviews or ratings. Our affiliate relationships do not influence our scores. See our about page for more information.

Limitations

Our reviews are based on publicly available information and do not include hands-on germination testing of every variety. We recommend that gardeners verify current pricing, policies, and variety availability on the official website before making a purchase. Seed quality can vary by variety and lot, and growing conditions affect results.
